Eight Queen’s College students who were accredited to represent Barbados at the 8th CARIFTA Chess Championships in Curacao from April 18 to 23, 2019, got some help from the Queen’s College Association.
At the General Meeting on Saturday, April 13, QCA President Michelle Daniel presented a $1,600 cheque to President of the Barbados Chess Federation Allan Herbert to purchase uniforms for the students.
Ms. Daniel told the alumni present that this is an example of how the funds they contribute to the QCA are in turn used to assist current students or in other areas where the school has a need.
Mr. Herbert expressed gratitude to the QCA, and pointed out that a third of the CARIFTA chess team are QC students. He added that Queen’s College has won the national schools chess championships five times. Mr. Herbert singled out the efforts of alumnus Corey Elcock, who was himself represented QC at chess, but has returned to coach the school’s teams.
The students are: Aaron Haynes, Kiarra Eversley, Tyson Holder, Vanessa Greenidge, Louis Wilson, Erin Mahon, Seagan Sandiford and Savannah Corrigan.
These students performed outstandingly in the Barbados Chess Federation’s 2019 National Junior Youth & Cadet Championships, and some are past CARIFTA medallists.
